Nuffnang Tiger Stand Out Party

Last Saturday we had one of the largest Nuffnang Blogger parties ever in HQNine at TTDI Plaza with close to 300 attendees. This time we worked together with Tiger on this… so naturally it was a party with lots and lots of booze.
Just about all our parties have some sort of theme for people to dress up and that night the theme was to wear anything that “Stands Out”. The best dressed male would win an XBOX 360 and the best dressed female would win a Coach bag.
The best dressed male came as Edward Scissorhands
and the best dressed female was….
It’s unbelievable… the number of girls that night who wanted to win the Coach bag so badly. Some even told me how badly they wanted to win but unfortunately I had no say in the judging.
I’m going to let the photos tell the story of the rest of the night.
1) Here’s a picture of the main people responsible for putting the party together.
and this is the client Eileen,
Who many many times warned us before the night that if anything went wrong that night she would “Come after us”.
2) And a picture of some of the Nuffies that went that night.
3) We had a wall right outside the party Nuffnangers who did the best pre-event entries could put on their hand print there.
4) Just around 7PM or so the crowd started to gather.
And as the sky darkened, a lot more Nuffnangers started crowding around outside HQNine.
Registering themselves and getting their goodie bags.
5) The Spartans showed up shortly after all dressed for war.
I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw them. If you’re wondering why… then make sure you’ve seen this.
They were like celebrities to me! And I was star struck… especially when one of them called my name “Timothy!!!”
I was expecting him to say
“MADNESS??!?!? THIS… IS… SPARTA!!!!”
and kick me down a deep dark longkang but instead I ended up taking a picture with them.

6) There were lots of games that night with Liang and Jojo Struys taking the stage as the emcees.
One of them involved having two grown men put stockings on their heads and have a little tug of war.
Kenny who went as Susan Boyle that night
won the match.
Seriously… it wasn’t even a challenge to Kenny.
Check this out. He pulled this guy so hard he almost swung the guy through the window in front of him.
This is Susan Boyle celebrating after she swung his competing finalist to Abu Dhabi.
And Susan Boyle giving her tearful “Thank you speech”.
While everyone else watched on
7) There were lots of prizes that were given away that night too. Apart from the XBOX 360 and Coach Bag, there were like Nintendo DS Lite’s that were given away.
For the other people that didn’t win best dressed, we also gave out little goodie bags with a little bolster in it but with a hidden Topshop/Topman voucher inside.
8) Oh and I nearly forgot the food.
For some reason there were two buffet lines but everyone just seemed to want to line up only at one. The other line was completely empty.
I think it’s because Nuffnangers are all so polite they just decide to queue where everyone else is queuing so it doesn’t look like they cut anyone’s line.

9) Here’s the big surprise of the night.

The party was held on the 6th of June which also happened to be my birthday. Whatever it was I made it very clear to Robb that this was going to be a Nuffnang Tiger party and not my birthday party so I told him to make sure there was no birthday related thing or anything.
Robb and the rest of the Nuffies though… disobeyed. Apparently with authorization from the other Founder of Nuffnang (Ming),

Robb and Princess ignored my orders and put together a surprise for me.
At the end of the night Liang announced that it was my birthday and Princess appeared with a cake in her hand.
This I thought was the best picture of the night.
When I saw this picture of Princess holding the cake later on, my heart melted. Princess was walking towards the stage and everyone was singing Happy Birthday when she happened to walk under the gush of air from a ceiling air-con. All the candles were blown off and everyone rushed to light it back on which was when this picture was taken.

Right after I blew the re-lit candles off the cake everyone started coming up to me and pasting these little post-it notes on me. I later found out that they had earlier distributed these notes quietly to the Nuffnangers there that night and asked them to write a birthday wish.
At the end of the night I went through the notes and there were some really touching and really funny birthday wishes.
I think I’ll dedicate a fresh new blog entry to them in the next few days and share some of them then.
Until then my dear readers!

How My Surprise Birthday Party Turned Out To Be Not A Surprise

Updated: Just added a few more pictures that I just got from Yee Hou.
Since like a month ago, Princess was planning a surprise birthday party for me. A party that I knew everything about by the time I showed up at Modestos last Friday night for dinner.
Here’s how I figured everything out.
1) Suet Li
The first news I ever heard of the party was from her.

She had just come back from the USA and we were both at Princess’ house having a family dinner. She as the gf of Princess’ brother and me as the bf of Princess 🙂
Suddenly at the dinner table she shouted out at me
“EH!!! Why you never invite me for your birthday party?? You invite Jia Meei but didn’t invite me lah!”
I looked at her confused.
“What birthday party?”
And then I looked over at Princess who by then was giving out a very nervous look (though she was trying really hard to act cool).
Then I hugged her and laughed
“Awww my Baby’s planning me a birthday party!!!”
But Princess denied it…
So by then I knew that Princess was doing something for me. Though in the end we just decided between me and her that we were just going to have a quiet dinner with just the both of us and then meet friends for drinks later.  I just didn’t know the details…. until the day of the party itself.
2) Yee Hou
On the day itself Yee Hou called me to tell me that he had to apply for last minute emergency leave for something. So I said okay.
But he later on added
“But don’t worry dude… I’ll be back in time for tonight”.
At that point I was like
“Huh? Tonight?”
And he said
“Yeah the surprise party… OH SHIT!”
Then I laughed.
But it didn’t get so bad yet. Here’s when everything really spilled out.
3) Suet Li (AGAIN)
Suet came by to visit us Nuffies having lunch on Friday. After her quick Hi’s she had to go. Just before she left she said to me
Suet: See you tonight! Eh where is it again ar? It’s in Capsquare right?
Me: Huh?
Suet: Must be right? I mean in KL itself only got one Modestos at Capsquare right?
All the Nuffies there who knew of the plan kept totally quiet and then later proceeded to scold her for leaking out the plan. Suet apparently had forgotten or something that it was meant to be a surprise. When Princess later found out that Suet had accidentally leaked it out, she was furious. In Suet’s defence though, she thought I already knew about the party.
So I knew we were going to Modestos but I thought maybe for drinks later after Nicholas finally admitted to me
“Hey dude.. we’re just having drinks at Modestos ler.. not dinner”.
So I still thought that I was going to have a quiet dinner with Princess at Jake’s as we had planned. Something I was actually beginning to look forward to.
4) Pierre
Then sometime after lunch, Pierre called me up to ask
“Eh bro! Tonight what time and where again ar?”
I immediately stopped him from saying anything more and said
“I don’t know and I’m not supposed to know. So just ask Princess”.
5) The Final Blow
One hour before I was supposed to pick Princess up for dinner. Just as I was about to leave the office I asked the Nuffies where they were going to go for dinner before we met up later for drinks and Robb quickly presumptuously shouted
“Don’t pretend lar! We know you know everything! We’re all eating together at Modestos lah!”
I wasn’t pretending. I really didn’t know. But after that one reply I knew. By the time I picked Princess up I knew exactly what was going to happen. It was going to be a dinner with 30 or 40 of my close friends at Modestos (though she accidentally missed out Cheng Leong in all the rush. Sorry dude).
Unfortunately I don’t have many pictures from the night because I was too distracted but here are the few I have on my camera.

And one of them with me drinking a Flaming Lamborghini that they all made me drink later on.
After dinner that night, some friends came over to my place to chill for a while.

Kenny challenged Kim to a game of Nintendo Wii Boxing. And Kenny ended up losing but it’s not his fault. For some reason I often lose to girls in Wii Boxing myself… something about the damn game!
At the end of the night, Princess hugged me and asked if I was happy. I said yes. There’s just nothing better than spending your birthday with the friends that matter and nothing better than having someone put so much effort to put everything together for you. The surprise element in the end didn’t really matter.
Though I did tell her that if she wanted to do a surprise next time she needed to brief everyone properly and have some kind of back story to it just in case I asked. Just like how I skillfully planned hers a few months ago 🙂
I don’t think my Princess can do it though. She’s too innocent, honest and naive 🙂
Thank you Princess for organizing my 25th Birthday Party for me 🙂

Birthday Surprise

Princess planned me a surprise birthday party last night that didn’t eventually end up as a surprise because everyone started ‘accidentally’ spilling the beans.
I had fun though… nothing like being around close friends.
To all my friends who came and for those who wished me on Facebook, Twitter and text messages, thanks so much for your wishes.
And thank you Princess, for putting everything together 🙂
Will update more about it when I get more pictures. I only have a few from my camera. Here’s one.
In the mean time… tonight we have the Nuffnang Tiger party to look forward to.
Check out all the beer we’re going to be having there.
Must… control… myself….
Updates soon guys!

Things You Draw In Meetings

I was with Mehlin the other day at her office and she took out this notebook to take down some notes from our meeting.
In the notebook I saw some cute drawings.

I said “I’m guessing… you did this in a boring meeting?”

And she said “Yes“.
She even drew another one that said
“Where’s the idiot?”

And had the little cartoon point to a colleague next to her.
I think this is how we sometimes keep ourselves sane in boring lectures or meetings.

Twitter

Okay… I’ve started being a little addicted to Twitter again lately. I used to be addicted to it back in 2007, then for some reason it phased out on me and I never picked it up again because it stopped allowing SMS updates. I always thought… what’s the point if using it if I can’t update it from my mobile?

Now however I found an iPhone app for Twitter that works so I’m updating my Twitter very frequently wherever I go and whatever I do in my day again.
So if you’re not already following me…. FOLLOW ME!!!

Or you could just read the updates from my blog sidebar.
Off for a meeting now. Bai!

When accidents allow you to meet nice people

Let me tell you a story.
Boy goes back to Penang. Boy’s car breaks down in Penang so he has to leave it in the workshop there.
Boy’s Dad lends him another car to take back to KL while Boy’s car is left in Penang.
Back in KL one night, Boy drives to pick Girl up after work.
Boy gets to a traffic light just 20 seconds away from Girl’s office and waits excitedly for the light to turn green. Light turns green, Boy gets ready to shift gear but suddenly hears a big bang.
Boy looks in his rear view mirror to find a Kelisa had rammed into his car while he was staying totally still at the traffic light.
Boy curses “#$*(#($*#(*$”
That basically summarizes what happened to me in the past few days.
Yes, while waiting at the traffic light a car came and rammed me yesterday. It’s a really peculiar thing… in all my history of driving, I have been involved in 4 road accidents and ALL 4 of them involved somebody banging me from the back.
2 of the 4 involves somebody banging me from the back while I was not moving and just waiting at a traffic light.
The good thing though is that the guy who banged me was really apologetic about it. He came out and said “Adui sorry sorry sorry… I salah!!!”. His name is Idaham.
Idaham’s impact knocked in my bumper and also knocked down my exhaust pipe to the extent that I couldn’t move the car or it would be dragging all over the road.
Idaham was extremely nice though. He spent the next 15 minutes trying to figure out a way to tie it back up but we both didn’t have any idea how to.
Fortunately my Dad has this practice to keep two things in a car.
1) A Jumpstart cable in case the car engine died and needed help in starting up again.
2) A ROPE!!! (in case we needed to tow the car).
So we used the rope and tied the exhaust pipe to the lid of the car boot so I could drive again and send the car to the workshop the next morning.
My uncle Danny was nice enough to lend me a car of his to use.
*whew*
Even after I had gone home that night Idaham called me again to check on me to make sure I was ok. He was a little worried about how much the damage would cost, but I told him we’ll find out in the morning.
The next morning, Idaham texted me anxious about how much the damage was going to cost. Finally the mechanic quoted us RM550 for the repairs. It was a lot of money and I was going to have to come up with it first to pay the mechanic but Idaham assured me that he will pay me back for it no matter what.
I’m glad… because I’ve been in a few car accidents before and none of them were as apologetic and helpful as Idaham.
Just compare Idaham to the asshole lorry driver that banged me two years ago while I was at a traffic light waiting, then gave me a wrong phone number and quickly ran away (though I made a police report with his number plate). A world of a difference!
Thank you Idaham….. if anyone were to bang me again… I would really like it to be you. And I really hope you win a RM100,000 cash prize or some big reward from somewhere because people like you are the ones that deserve it.
Funny thing though is that Idaham later that day asked me if I was working. I said yes and he asked me where.
I said I work at a company called Nuffnang.
And he went
“Ooohh!!! I know Nuffnang! I’m a member there too!”
I laughed and said
“Yeah.. hehee we do blog advertising”
What a small world indeed 🙂

2 Teachers I Will Always Remember

Just got back from Penang. Damn stupid and unlucky at the same time. Halfway to Penang I did something stupid and ended up hurting the engine of my poor car. Fortunately my car was still able enough to take Princess and me back to Penang but I had to leave my car in a workshop there.
In the mean time I have to borrow another car from my Dad. A Honda Civic…. great car actually… really like it!
Anyway I was talking to Princess today about two teachers I have had in my life that I will always remember…. but not for good reasons.
Let me tell you about both of them.
1) “Selamat Pagi Datin”.
The first teacher was one I had in secondary school. She only came in as a replacement teacher one day. When she walked into the class, my friend Samuel who was the class monitor shouted out the routine
“Class Stand….”
And the whole class of 40 boys got up from their seats and stood up.
Then they followed the class monitor’s cue when he said
“Selamat Pagi Cikgu”.
When everyone proceeded to sit down, the teacher shouted
“SEKALI LAGI!”
Puzzled the class monitor shouted the greeting.. but a lot louder
“SELAMAT PAGI CIKGU!!!”
The whole classroom including myself echoed at the top of our lungs just in case she was upset we didn’t say it loud enough at first.
Seconds later we all stood to watch her to see if we could all sit down and yet it wasn’t enough.
She scolded us and made us wish her a few more times until she finally got fed up and told us to say instead
“SELAMAT PAGI DATIN!”
So we all followed her cue and finally she let us sit down.
We later found out that day that her husband is a Dato so she insists that everyone greet her as Datin… not as Cikgu.
2) “I knew you could do it”
The other teacher I will always remember is my mathematics teacher in college. Here’s the story.
I didn’t do Add Maths in school because knowing that I never wanted to be a Doctor, Scientist, Engineer or anything like that I decided to go into the Arts Stream instead. When I went into A-Levels though I wanted to take Maths and the first time I walked into a Maths class there I was terrified. I had never before even heard of anything like Differentiation or Integration at the point in time and the teacher was teaching it as the basics as if everyone was already supposed to know it.
Of course everyone around me was doing okay because all of them did Add Maths in school but I was completely clueless. So after the first class I went up to the teacher Miss J, and asked her for help. After she learned that I never did Add Maths she told me to drop the subject or she’s pretty sure I will fail or get a C or D or something.
I refused to believe that I couldn’t do it so I started taking private tuition and working very hard on my maths. Miss J wasn’t much help though. Whenever I went up to her for help she would get impatient with me and say

“I told you to drop it! You’re going to fail now… nothing you can do”.
On the other hand, she was really nice to a select group of A students in the class who were good in math. I don’t look up to teachers like this. I mean anyone can teach students who are naturally already good in the subject…. but a teacher really proves his/her worth he/she teaches someone who is bad in the subject and guide the student to an A at the end. This teacher had no patience to do any of that.
Somewhere in the mid-term or something she gave this really hard test where almost everyone except a few people passed the test. She came up to me and said
“I’m surprised you passed Tim”.
At the end of my A-Levels I had gotten an A for Mathematics. I bumped into her in a mall with some of my friends the other day and I told her my results.
She said then
“Congrats… I always knew you could do it”.
She was suddenly all nice to me and COMPLETELY ignorant to the fact that for 1 and a half years she had reminded me that I would fail or get a C at best.
I smiled out of courtesy but at the back of my head I was thinking to myself
“No thanks to you Miss J”
So these are the two teachers I will always remember in my life. I sometimes wonder if they had impacted anyone else the same way they impacted me.

Hello Radio Channels!

A few days ago I found myself all the way at the Astro office in Technology Park Malaysia. Was there for some meetings but right after my meetings I was given a tour of the AMP studios.
AMP Radio Networks is the company that houses many of the radio stations we listened to like Hitz.fm, My.fm, Mix.fm, Lite Fm and a whole lot more. It’s owned by Ananda Krishnan, one of the richest men in Malaysia…. who owns just about everything else except maybe the chair I’m sitting on right now
Junior is the nice person who offered to give us all the tour. He’s the guy on the left.
For those of you who don’t already know, the girl inside the studio through the double glass windows is Jojo Stryus.
Also inside the double glass is the legendary cockroach that somehow managed to get itself caught into between the windows many many years ago.
This is how a cockroach that has been there for many many years looks like.
It’s been there so long it’s probably already best friends with the metal screw next to it.
Junior made me promise to tell the story that it’s not that they didn’t want to remove the cockroach but just that it proved to be extremely difficult since it was in between two big pieces of thick glass.
So they left it there… perhaps hoping that it might just turn into dust and disappear one day.
Here’s where your favourite radio shows come from.
This is Mix.fm
And that’s Jay on Air on the inside.
She was really nice. When she saw me trying to take a picture of her later on she started waving and giving me a big smile.
We moved on to the rest of the studios and I spotted a studio that had the words “My.FM” on it.
I jumped a little excitedly
“WOW!!! MY.FM” and darted closer to see who was inside.
Junior caught up with me and said
“DUDE!!! You just walked RIGHT PASS HITZ!!!! I guess I know where your loyalty lies”.
I went “Whoops“, put my head down and turned around to check out Hitz.fm’s studio. I had met Ean earlier that morning right after he just finished his Morning Crew stint.
This is what the Hitz.fm studio looks like.

Right in between the My.FM and Hitz.FM studios was this panel for the show’s producers to sit on and monitor.

There was a screen with a whole playlist on all the songs that were going to be played on air. So if we saw that Lady Gaga’s Poker Face was the next song in the queue, right after the current song finished Lady Gaga would start playing.

All really computerized you’d almost think it could run itself. That’s the future. Everything running itself and doing things for you. One day I’m sure they’re even going to invent a computer that would calculate exactly how much toilet paper you need to use to wipe your ass on each swipe.

The music you hear in the studio is actually 8 seconds earlier than what we hear on our radios elsewhere. They have the 8 second buffer just in case someone makes a mistake or says something that they shouldn’t say on air.

Right next to the My.FM studio is the Xfresh studio where Shaz was DJing.
Xfresh is a very unique station compared to the rest. It plays only Indy music and it’s not allowed to play any other form of music. It can’t for example play anything from overseas. If they do it, they’ll get some big fine and all the XFresh staff will have to go out in the car park and do 300 push ups under the hot sun (No I’m kidding about that second bit).
Serious serious offense.
Right after the Xfresh studio were these little booths that DJs could go into to do some pre-recording. You know recording stuff to be played later on the show.
I like how they’re designed after the London phone booth.
I walked around to check out some of the other stations like Era.FM

and finally even came across a wall filled with autographed stuff from the artists that come by.
So everyone that was my tour of the stations we listen to every day 🙂
Thanks for the tour Junior.
Weekend’s here! WoohoO!

Gifts When They’re Most Needed

I just got Princess a new phone that she needed badly.

Princess had her eyes on the LG Ice-Cream for the longest time. Ever since she saw the LG skinner we put on her blog as part of a Nuffnang campaign a few months ago.
Problem was that she already had a new China iPhone from her Dad so she really didn’t need a new phone. Heck already I’m getting so much flak from the Nuffies that scold me each day for “spoiling the market” so I wasn’t going to buy her anything that she didn’t need.
Thanks to her rough hands and sloppiness though, she managed to break her China iPhone in record time…. within two months or something. Living on a “borrowed” phone from her mum she needed a new phone so I decided to help out a little.

Princess felt bad and didn’t want me to give her anything without an occasion so I said that this was our advance 1st Anniversary present.
Her reply
“That’s like… 5 months away!!!”
But here’s what I think about presents like this. I always believe that we shouldn’t be governed by a fixed time or occasion before we buy someone something. I think if there’s any point in time we think of something that your special someone would like or need, then why not buy it then when he/she needs it most?
So thanks to Mike for helping me source for the phone, I managed to get one for her.
I think the phone is great. I mean it’s not expensive and has all the features you need. Plus the keypad is big which helps for girls with long finger nails like Princess.
She was happy… ripping open the box the minute I brought the phone into her room.
This same phone woke me up late last night when it started ringing though.
I began to think that maybe I should’ve gotten her a phone without a speaker. Heh… but well.. whatever makes her happy.

Meeting Kenny, Pierre and Lay See

Kenny was in town so I met up with him last weekend in Pavilion.

It just dawned on me that day that I’ve known and been working with Kenny for 2… coming 3 years now. That flew by really quick for me.
A lot of people ask me what Kenny Sia is like in person and sometimes I feel the rumours that go around just don’t do justice to the person. Honestly before I met Kenny I had heard my fair share of ‘not-so-nice’ things about him. You had everything nasty anyone could say about him in the list. But here’s an honest account of what he’s like.

He’s humble (yes… HUMBLE… the opposite of arrogant) and while I think he separates personal and business issues very well, he tends to very often considers how people on the “other side” feel or are whenever he does anything. He’s easy to get along with. Simple and generous as well with both his friends and business partners. And I am pretty sure that of the 10 people out there who talk bad about him, 9.5 of them would change their minds if they had a chance to sit down with him over lunch to really get to know him.
Oh and if you’re thinking that maybe he’s just nice to me because I work at Nuffnang you’re wrong again. He was like this to me even when Nuffnang just started and I had nothing. Even at a time when he knew I needed his support/help most, he made sure of it that he never took advantage of me.
One thing that people say about him is true though… he’s often surrounded by pretty girls
but heck like that’s his fault!!!
Anyway, after lunch with Kenny I dropped Princess to go shopping with Suet and Jia Meei in Bangsar. Then I headed home to meet Pierre to do some serious business. While the girls had some shopping to do, the boys had some serious business to take care of.
We had lots of aliens to kill and a world to save.
After saving the world Pierre decided that it was time to celebrate.
So he brought his wife Lay See, Princess and I to Jake’s in Starhill for a wonderful steak dinner. When I say wonderful… I mean… “DID I JUST DIE AND GO TO HEAVEN” kind of wonderful. Allow me to illustrate my meal that night.
It was so good I felt so bad having to shit it out the next day.
Funny thing is, one of our new Nuffies in Singapore was apparently from Pierre’s school in Malacca. She told us that Pierre and Lay See used to be the most popular couple in school because well… both were good looking, from well-to-do families, smart and uhmm… tall or something. You know, the Malaccan equivalent of the head of the football team dating the head of the cheerleading team.
I guess that holds true even up till today. I mean look at them, compared to Princess and I.

They’re both tall, dress well, carry themselves with class and even when they laugh they do it with “class”.
As compared to Princess and I who dress like a bunch of school kids, short (or fat) and roll around like beavers when we laugh.
*sigh*
We will never be that “it” couple.
